My father taught me to think big.

He left his family home at the age of 13 to escape a whipping. From that point on he stayed with various families taking care of their farm chores to pay for his room and board. The only college course he took was one in horseshoeing.

There were eight of us in our family. I had four brothers and one sister. When I was very young I remember sleeping in the top bunk-bed in a corner of the house that had been the pantry.

I was the second oldest and by the time I was ten years old, we had the largest home in the community. People would come just to see our home.

I remember taking vacations in our blue stationwagon that pulled our blue trailer that pulled our blue boat. We were always taking vacations. My dad knew how to have fun.

Because my father was able to provide a very good living for his family after coming from nothing, I grew up feeling like anyone could make good money if they wanted to.

It wasn’t hard for me to become an entrepreneur. I thought that was the only real way to make a living.

Creating business after business, I never thought twice about taking on something new or big. To me, it was just what you did – and of course I would succeed – why wouldn’t I?

This was the legacy my father left me.

It gave me a foundation to have faith in myself.

It gave me a foundation to believe I could make a lot of money. If he could, so could I.

Having faith, confidence and certainty in life and in ourselves is invaluable. It is the foundation to be able to create our desires.

I wonder where my father got the confidence to start his first business. I know he didn’t just jump off a cliff; he took one step at a time until he felt confident to do it.

But, most people dream of having their own business, being their own boss, making a lot of money. What made my father actually do it?

His father was poor. His brothers were poor.

But he took a different path and because of it, I was given a higher and better start in life.

What gives those who succeed the belief that they can actually succeed?
